Specifically the Sorting and wand ceremonies. People are all, “OMG JK ROWLING PUT ME IN SLYTHERIN THAT MUST MEAN I’M A TRUE SLYTHERIN.” Well, I guess, but I disagree. JK Rowling didn’t put you in Slytherin. An automated quiz grading program did.
And I have nothing against an automated quiz system, but the questions that were part of it were awful. Beach or city? Black or white? Pick a chess piece? Which box do you open? Those tell you absolutely nothing about my personality, I promise. On top of that, everyone’s test is different, so they don’t give you any accurate results. (A better method would be everyone getting every question, weighted equally; what if the chess and beach questions happen to be your quirks?) You can make up whatever phony-bologna response to that you want, but I know what my personality is and I’m not letting JK Rowling or anyone else tell me that it’s different.
I read a reblog that said something to the effect of “I’ve always known I was a Hufflepuff but I have some Gryffindor qualities. I own mostly Hufflepuff merchandise but I’m willing to switch if JKR says I belong in Gryffindor.” I mean, if you want to you can? But a website asking you if you like the beach or if you like chess pieces does not determine your personality.
So I guess what I’m saying, if anybody is listening, is don’t change who you are for a crappy flash website made by an author. I appreciate her work as any other Harry Potter fan, but she’s not a psychologist or anything.
